Hyperpigmentation (Dark Spots)

What are DARK SPOTS (HYPERPIGMENTATION)?

Melanin is the dark pigment present in skin and is produced by melanocytes. Dark spots or pigmented lesions occur when an abundance of melanocytes are found in the skin. When dark pigment intensifies, it forms freckles, brown age spots, and moles. Dermatosis papulosa nigra (very small and numerous slightly elevated dark papules or bumps, on the face, particularly on the cheeks and near the eyes) is an example of a pigment containing lesion, as are freckles and brown age spots and liver spots.

CAUSE

Most skin discoloration is caused by exposure to the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. Some people, especially men and women of color, are prone to uneven skin tone more than those with fair skin, due to the increase in melanin production. Melanin is the pigment that creates the “tan”. Everyone has basically the same amount of melanocytes, which are the cells that produce melanin, however people who have darker skin release more melanin into the skin.

The release of melanin is part of the body’s immune response. It is nature’s way of protecting the skin from further damage after it has been exposed to an excess of ultra violet rays. Darker discoloration usually indicates damage within the deeper layers of the skin and may be more difficult to treat.

What can be done?

For milder cases of hyperpigmentation/discoloration, Dr. Moore may prescribe a topical hydroquinone 4%. This will assist in lessening the appearance of dark spots and hyperpigmentation.

Many of the smaller spots and skin lesions of the face, neck, and hands are easily removed with Laser Removal. These include so-called liver spots on the hands, small brown spots, or age spots on the face, and freckles and freckle-like spots on the face and elsewhere.

Dr. Milton Moore offers the latest in treatment options to eliminate unattractive skin lesions with the gentle action of the intense pulse light (Photorejuvenation). The mild and precise treatment characteristics of the IPL provides consistent results.
